What Does Each Flood Warning Severity Mean?
There are three flood warning severities in England, Wales and Scotland: a Flood Alert means flooding is possible, a Flood Warning means flooding is expected, and a Severe Flood Warning means there is danger to life. Each asks for a different response.

How Do You Get A Flood Warning By Text Or Phone?
Flood warnings by phone call, text or email come from the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales and SEPA's Floodline in Scotland. You sign up online or by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188, which is available 24 hours a day.
Each nation's service works slightly differently:
- England — the Environment Agency states that the service is free; messages come by phone, text or email.
- Wales — Natural Resources Wales's service is free, by text message, phone call and/or email; sign up online or on Floodline 0345 988 1188. Some locations will only receive flood alerts; not flood warnings.
- Scotland — If your property is within an area covered by a SEPA flood monitoring system, you will be able to sign up to receive a targeted Flood Warning message for your local area. You can also call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 and select option 2 for Scotland.
- Northern Ireland — flooding is reported on 0300 2000 100; NI Direct points residents to Met Office weather warnings.
What Should You Do When A Flood Warning Is Issued?
When a flood warning is issued, follow the official advice for that severity, and call 999 if anyone is in immediate danger. The Environment Agency's advice for a Flood Warning is to act now: protect yourself and others, move to a safe place and put flood protection in place.
