Which UK Rivers Are Highest Above Their Normal Level Today?

The table sorts every gauge by how far its latest reading is above the top of its typical range.

Each reading shows its own time. The Environment Agency's latest levels are updated once or twice a day when there's a low risk of flooding. It's updated more frequently when the risk of flooding increases, so readings at different stations can be hours apart.


How Do You Find The River Level Near You?

You find the river level near you by pressing "near me" or typing a town, postcode, river or station into the search box above. The nearest monitoring stations appear with their latest reading, trend and distance.

If you do not know your river's name:

  1. Use "near me" to list the closest stations by straight-line distance.
  2. Search your town or postcode to see the stations serving that place.
  3. Open the station that sits on the river running through your town, rather than simply the closest one, because a closer gauge can be on a different watercourse.

Each town's flood risk page also names its main river and nearest gauge.


What Does "Typical Range" Mean On A River Gauge?

A gauge's typical range is the band between its normal low and normal high levels. The Environment Agency explains: "We calculate the 'normal' range using an average of past measurements and other local factors." A reading is shown as low, normal or high when it is below, within or above that range.

Three points help when reading a gauge:

  • Levels are local. Most river levels are measured relative to a fixed point on or close to the riverbed (local datum), so a height at one station cannot be compared with a height at another.
  • A level of zero or below is possible, because the fixed point stays put while the riverbed can erode or silt up.
  • Forecast levels are not warnings. The Environment Agency notes: "River level forecasts on the service come directly from a computer model. Unlike the forecasts in our flood warnings, these are not refined by a flood forecaster."

What River Level Means Flooding Is Likely?

There is no single river level at which flooding starts. Each gauge has its own thresholds, often shown alongside past floods at that spot, and the Environment Agency issues a flood warning rather than publishing one national number.

A real station shows how the thresholds step up. On the Environment Agency's page for the River Ure at Ripon Ure Bank, read on 16 September 2026:

The same numbers mean nothing at another gauge. Where a station page on this site shows thresholds, they are that station's own. A level above the typical range is a reason to check live flood warnings, not a warning in itself.
