What Is A Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a pump that sits in a small pit dug below floor level and pumps water that drains into it back outside. Historic England describes a sump and pump system as Installing a sump and pump system in a basement or under a timber suspended floor – to pump water back outside – is an effective way to remove floodwater.

How Does A Sump Pump Work?

A sump pump works by switching on when water in the sump reaches a set level, usually via a float switch, and pumping it through a discharge pipe to a point outside the building. It removes water as it arrives rather than keeping it out.

Three things decide whether it keeps up:

  1. Capacity. Historic England says The system needs to be sized appropriately to make sure it can cope with the volume of water. It should be maintained regularly and checked after each flood event.

A sump pump is fitted by digging a sump at the lowest point, installing a liner and pump, and running a discharge pipe outside, which usually needs a builder or waterproofing specialist. Basements may also need waterproofing to BS 8102:2022.

  1. Survey where water enters and how much.
  2. Size the pump for the expected inflow, as Historic England advises.
  3. Dig and line the sump at the lowest point.
  4. Install the pump with a float switch and a non-return valve on the discharge.
  5. Route the discharge safely away from the building.
  6. Provide back-up power above the flood level.
  7. Maintain it regularly and check it after each flood.

Does A Sump Pump Reduce Your Insurance Premium?

A sump pump does not automatically reduce your insurance premium; each insurer decides whether protection counts.
